Abstract

Emotional intelligence is seen through a wide range of competencies that distinguish top leaders from average ones. Key issues that contribute to the achievement of leadership effectiveness can be seen through the emotional intelligence framework. Within that context, self-awareness becomes the first ability firmly related to leadership. Accurate self-assessment is the key to superior performance. Leaders who are aware of their strengths and weaknesses are not afraid to admit their mistakes, they learn from the experience and seek help and support in strengthening their capabilities. Hence, the study sought to examine the effects of self-awareness on organization leadership in non-governmental organizations in Nairobi County, Kenya. Correlation between self-awareness and organizational leadership had a significance level of .001. The value is lower than 0.05 and thus indicating that there was a significant correlation between the two variables. Hence, the null hypotheses were rejected. Thus, indicating that there is a positive link between self-awareness and leadership. In conclusion, a self-aware leader can easily tune into how others feel and act empathetically, which is an essential basis for interpersonal resonance. Self-awareness, as part of EI, has been linked to leadership with a statistical significance.
