Police Deviance as Viewed by the Thai Public and Police

Abstract

The research purposes were to 1) explore public views of police deviance 2) investigate police views of police deviance, and 3) realize the difference of police deviance views between the public and police. The methods involved questionnaires gathered from the public and police officers nationwide. The results showed the visions about police deviance viewed by police administration monitoring committees as the public and police officers at a moderate level. As main types, organisational deviance/OrD, occupational deviance/OcD, and abusive authority/AA has highlighted the subsidiary types that multiplicity of organisational structures and biased promotion for relatives, parties or subordinates in OrD, supports for illegal gambling and entertainment complexes and takes of a lot of cases to investigate, but breakdown to summarize them in time in OcD, and use of aggressive speeches, screams and threats to suspects, workmates, subordinates, families and others in AA were among the highest problems. The police deviance views difference between the public and police was statistically significant. The guidelines of resolve and prevention of police deviance were suggested.
