Abstract

Aluminum metal matrix composites are the economical choice for wide variety of mechanical applications. Its cost effectiveness and light weight characteristics make it a popular grade of material. Aluminium composites have better advantages such as good strength, high specific stiffness, wear resistance, low thermal expansion, creep resistance, and good corrosion resistance. In this investigation, Al/frit and Al/ beryl composites were fabricated by liquid metallurgy route by varying percentage of reinforcements from 0 wt.% to 6 wt.% in steps of 2. The microstructural studies have been carried out to know the distribution of reinforcement particulates in the matrix material. The Brinell hardness and tensile tests were conducted on both as-cast and its composites. The results reveal that as the reinforcement particulate content increases there were significant increase in the hardness, ultimate tensile strength, young's modulus and decrease in ductility.
