Performance of City Level Reforms under JnNURM in India

Abstract

For the first time, government of India had launched Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) on 3rd December, 2005 to improve urban infrastructure facilities in the sectors of water supply, waste water management, storm water and drainage, preservation of water body in urban areas, solid waste management, urban renewal, development of historical areas, urban transport and housing for urban poor in 65 cities. For the implementation of projects under this scheme, number of mandatory reforms at city has been identified by government of India. In this context, paper brings the overview of all cities reforms achievement based on the data available on the public domain. The objectives of this paper are (a) to review the reforms documentation under JnNURM, (b) to evaluate the performance of reforms achieved in 65 cities, and (c) to develop the strategy to carry out reforms under JnNURM. The research methodology was adopted mainly from the government documents for literature review and secondary data for evaluation of reforms performance at city level.
