Abstract

Day care facility has become an emerging issue in Bangladesh. Women workers, specially the garment workers are demanding on-site and outside child care facilities here in Bangladesh. It is already found in different studies that having childcare facilities has a positive impact on employee behavior and improve productivity. So, this study tries to understand the necessity of quality child care facilities and its impact on the performance of women workers in garment factories of Chittagong, Bangladesh. In this regard, 100 women workers are chosen from ten garment factories of Chittagong, Bangladesh purposively and their opinions are taken on different performance criteria and their relationship with quality child care facilities. It is found from the study that performance indicators are strongly influenced by the quality child care facilities provided by the Ready-Made Garments (RMG) to their women workers. They also opined that most of them still do not use the existing child care facilities provided to them as they are not confident enough about the quality of the child care centers. It is also stated by them that both the workers as well as management are not so much concerned and do not realize the impact of quality child care on the performance of women worker. So, this study makes some recommendations that should be followed by the management of different garment factories of Bangladesh to improve the facilities of their child care centers and make workers more conscious about that.
